2007 East – West Shrine Game Notes                                                                                    Houston, Texas

Typically, the East – West Shrine Game showcases talent destined for rounds three through seven of the NFL draft. This year appeared to be no different, but a few players certainly stood out throughout the workouts and game. Here are some random notes about who impressed and who didn’t.

In no particular order, here are five players who created a “buzz” amongst the scouts:                                                     Steven Harris – DE, Florida, 6’4”, 285 lbs.: Harris showed explosive speed all week and spent most of his time in the opponents’ backfield. His hands were the best of all the defensive linemen in Houston.                                                     Desmond Bishop – LB, California, 6’2”, 245 lbs.: he had it all - great size, speed, and desire. During the game, he could be seen on every play. If he wasn’t in on the tackle, he wasn’t far away.                                                                                     Brad Lau – FB, Boise St., 5’11”, 242 lbs.: for someone of his stature, he displayed very good quickness. In addition, he exhibited the hands and talent in the receiving game of a fullback destined for a West Coast offense.                                     Daniel Bazuin – DE, Central Michigan, 6’3”, 272 lbs.: he was extremely quick off the ball. It was as though he knew the snap count on each play. Even though he was lined up against left tackles throughout the week, he beat all of them on a regular basis (ended up with 2.5 sacks in the game).                                                                                                                           David Ball – WR, New Hampshire, 6’2”, 200 lbs.: Ball was one of the more sought out players at this year’s game. His ideal size and exceptional hands were very evident, but his lack of speed made it difficult to create much separation.

In general, the three players that were the most disappointing:                                                                                            John Beck – QB, Brigham Young, 6’2”, 212 lbs.: in addition to his age (26, because of fulfilling his two year Mormon mission) and size (his listed 6’2” is a definite reach); both his accuracy and arm strength were questionable at best.                                Dallas Sartz – LB, Southern California, 6’5”, 240 lbs.: although he’s never been a physically gifted athlete, Sartz’s “over-achieving” nature has been chronicled. However, he didn’t stand out as a leader or make any plays during the game.       Drew Tate – QB, Iowa, 6’0”, 192 lbs.: he seemed to be “rattled” all week. While he showed mobility, he was holding the ball too long and fumbled a couple of snaps.

Overall, with the exception of Harris and Bishop, nobody made a case to move significantly up the draft boards.
