Happy Turducken Day!!! Today, I thought I'd provide a little football history for you. Having grown up in Detroit, I can tell you that there is no more proud tradition than the Thanksgiving Day game. In 1934, G.A. Richards, the owner of the Lions, scheduled a game between the "expansion" Lions and the Chicago Bears. He even convinced NBC radio to cover the game coast-to-coast. Starting in 1951, the Green Bay Packers were the scheduled opponent and promptly lost 10 out of 13. However, in 1963, Vince Lombardi felt that the Packers had become a large enough part of the tradition that they deserved to host the game every other year. Of course, the Lions balked at the idea, claiming that they had been the originators of the idea and would always play at home. When the complaint was presented to Pete Rozelle, he sided with the Lions, and the game has remained in Detroit. Picks appear in bold. Green Bay (-3) at Detroit Oh, and by the way, the idea that the Lions play better for the holiday is an absolute joke. For every time they played well and upset a formidable opponent, I can list two in which they played down to the level of horrible teams. New York Jets at Dallas (-13.5) Last week was the "Super Bowl" for the Jets and they'll play on Thursday like it's the beginning of the offseason. Indianapolis (-11.5) at Atlanta The Colts are hurting, literally and figuratively, but the Falcons are an absolute mess. I can't remember a first-year coach pushing as many wrong buttons as Bobby Petrino. I wonder if he's already hoping the University of Michigan comes calling. New Orleans (-2) at Carolina From what I've seen of the Panthers, I really think they've given up on John Fox. Well, everyone except Steve Smith anyway. Tennessee (-1.5) at Cincinnati This pick all depends on the availability of Albert Haynesworth. As you can see, I'm hoping he's ready to go. Houston (+4) at Cleveland From what I see, both of these very young teams have an extremely bright future. Buffalo at Jacksonville (-7.5) Jacksonville very well may be the second best team in the league right now. Oakland at Kansas City (-5) Should Kansas City fans be as frightened as I am about the "Brody Croyle" era? Minnesota at New York Giants (-7) I'm wary of this because of all the injuries to the Giants' backfield. You know what that means: MORE ELI MANNING!!! "Is there any way I can buy down the point spread, sir?" Seattle (-3) at St. Louis I have a good feeling about the Rams winning a few more games down the stretch, but this isn't one of them. Washington at Tampa Bay (-3) Believe it or not, as erratic as they've been, the Bucs are 4-0 against the spread at home this year. San Francisco at Arizona (-10.5) I'm definitely going to regret this one. Denver (+1.5) at Chicago I just think the Broncos have too many weapons, and the wind won't affect Jay Cutler's passes. Baltimore at San Diego (-8.5) You could take 20 points on this one and I'd still take the Chargers. Philadelphia at New England (-24) Somewhere along the line, the Patriots are going to slip a little and stumble into a close game, but I just can't see the A.J. Feeley-led Eagles being that team. Miami at Pittsburgh (-16) If Ricky Williams shows up, do we all get free weed? We will definitely have enough leftovers to munch on. Last Weeks Record: 8-8-0 Overall Record: 84-69-7 |
