2008 NFL Mock Draft, version 1.0

Of course, this mock draft will probably change a half-dozen times before late-April, but if for no other reason, I enjoy the comments that I get from readers. So, feel free to let me know what you think. I always like to get a feel for how fans are going to respond to their team drafting an offensive lineman over the exciting running back that everyone clamored for on sports talk radio shows.

1

Miami

Chris Long
Virginia
Defensive End
Long reminds Bill Parcells and Tony Sparano of Demarcus Ware and they'll look to use him in a similar fashion.
2 St. Louis Jake Long
Michigan
Offensive Tackle
Since the other Long is gone, they'll look to bolster a severely depleted offensive line.
3 Atlanta Matt Ryan
Boston College
Quarterback
A dream-come-true situation for Atlanta, and considering everything he's been through, Arthur Blank deserves some luck.
4 Oakland Darren McFadden
Arkansas
Running Back
We all know how much Al Davis likes speed. Ummmm, I mean on-the-field speed.
5 Kansas City Ryan Clady
Boise State
Offensive Tackle
This is early for Clady, but the Chiefs are absolutely desperate for some O-line help.
6 New York Jets Vernon Gholston
Ohio State
Defensive End
Gholston fits perfectly as an outside linebacker in Eric Mangini's 3-4 scheme.
7 New England Keith Rivers
USC
Linebacker
If they stay in this spot, Bill Belichick and Scott Pioli will add some youth to the aging linebacker position.
8 Baltimore Glenn Dorsey
LSU
Defensive Tackle
The Ravens will be thrilled that Dorsey falls into their lap.
9 Cincinnati Sedrick Ellis
USC
Defensive Tackle
Basically, any defensive player will help the Bengals, and getting Ellis in this slot is a steal.
10 New Orleans Leodis McKelvin
Troy
Cornerback
Like the Bengals, the Saints need a defensive overhaul, and the secondary is a good place to start.
11 Buffalo Mike Jenkins
South Florida
Cornerback
Dick Jauron has bigger needs, but at this pick, they're simply not a good value.
12 Denver Chris Williams
Vanderbilt
Offensive Tackle
Since Williams is not an overpowering tackle, but has excellent feet, so he's perfect for the zone-blocking scheme.
13 Carolina Jeff Otah
Pittsburgh
Offensive Tackle
Otah is extremely strong and simply mauls people.
14 Chicago Rashard Mendenhall
Illinois
Running Back
Yes folks, the Ced Benson Era is over (actually, did it ever begin?) It's also convenient, Mendenhall only has to move about 125 miles.
15 Detroit Derrick Harvey
Florida
Defensive End
Since there's no wide receivers worthy of this pick, Matt Millen goes with the best three-down pass rusher on the board.
16 Arizona Jonathan Stewart
Oregon
Running Back
It's not necessarily and indictment of Edgerrin James, but he hasn't exactly been a huge hit in the desert.
17 Minnesota Phillip Merling
Clemson
Defensive End
Believe it or not, the Vikings are still looking for a defensive lineman who can get to the quarterback.
18 Houston Dominick Rodgers-Cromartie
Tennessee State
Cornerback
With the injury to Dunta Robinson, the Texans are in desperate need of a cornerback. And no, Jacques Reeves doesn't count.
19 Philadelphia Andre Caldwell
Florida
Wide Receiver
This may be too early for any receiver in this draft, but I've got a feeling that the birds want the best one in the draft.
20 Tampa Bay Limas Sweed
Texas
Wide Receiver
Joey Galloway and Ike Hilliard are old and Michael Clayton is still nowhere to be found.
21 Washington Devin Thomas
Michigan State
Wide Receiver
Simply put, the Redskins need a wide receiver with some size.
22 Dallas Aqib Talib
Kansas
Cornerback
His ball skills and size make up for his somewhat questionable technique.
23 Pittsburgh Branden Albert
Virginia
Offensive Guard
The loss of Alan Faneca will hardly be felt when the Steelers replace him with this incredibly athletic 309-pounder.
24 Tennessee Malcolm Kelly
Oklahoma
Wide Receiver
Maybe Albert Haynesworth will be happy after Mike Reinfeldt supplies Vince Young with a potent wideout.
25 Seattle Dustin Keller
Purdue
Tight End
Many scouts argue that he had the best combine performance overall. He'll be the best receiving threat for the Seahawks as soon as he steps on the field.
26 Jacksonville Mario Manningham
Michigan
Wide Receiver
The run on wide receivers continues with the one that everyone thought at the beginning of the season would be the first off the board.
27 San Diego Gosder Cherilus
Boston College
Offensive Tackle
The Chargers could use another bookend tackle to complement Marcus McNeill and Cherilus is the most natural fit on the right side.
28 Dallas Felix Jones
Arkansas
Running Back
It may not be the Razorback he was hoping for, but Jerry Jones gets one nonetheless. Think of all the money he'll save replacing one Jones with another.
29 San Francisco James Hardy
Indiana
Wide Receiver
Hardy's speed (4.47 40-yard dash) for a receiver over 6'5" is impressive. Ten years from now, he'll be one of the best players to come out of this draft.
30 Green Bay Antwaun Molden
Eastern Kentucky
Cornerback
While he's not as well know as some of the other cornerbacks in this draft, he opened a lot of eyes at the combine. At 6'1", he fits the Packers' mold.
31 New England Forfeited Given the chance, I wonder if Bill Belichick would have done things differently.
32 New York Giants Wesley Woodyard
Kentucky
Linebacker
After losing Kawika Mitchell to free agency, Woodyard is an athletic specimen that will fit in nicely on the weak side.
