2010 NFL Draft Blog Welcome everyone to Doctor Football's 2010 NFL Draft blog. If you're as geeked about football as I am, you've been waiting for this day for about two months, two weeks, and 20 hours (or, the second the Super Bowl ended). In the hours leading up to the draft, I'll be including information I've heard since this morning. **Lance Zierlein has reported that a
source close to the Chiefs said that they are zeroing in on Eric Berry
at the fifth spot. 6:37 - ho hum, St. Louis selects Sam Bradford. Lance Zierlein of 1560 AM in Houston told everyone that this would be the pick back in February. It's a good pick, but you should never disregard the best player in the draft. 6:44 - well, me and about 80,000,000 other mock drafts are 2 for 2. The Lions take Ndamukong Suh and get the best player in this year's draft. For once, the Lions get it right. 6:53 - Gerald McCoy goes to the Bucs. This is a great pick for Raheem Morris gets a superior interior pass rusher and a guy that will remind Tampa Bay fans of Warren Sapp. In addition, he's a PR guy's best friend. Nobody was more popular at the Combine with the press than McCoy. Here's where the draft will get interesting. From what I'm hearing, the Redskins could be a real wild card. 6:59 - the Skins take Trent Williams. I'm a little surprised, because I thought that Shanahan would go for the more accomplished Russell Okung. Either way, they satisfy a major need. Forget their other needs, they had their choice of left tackles and that's the route they needed to take. Congratulations for instilling some sanity in D.C., Mike Shanahan. 7:06 - wow, this is the first surprise of the night for me. I really thought the Chiefs would go for an offensive tackle. It's a much bigger need and they had their choice of some of the best. Don't get me wrong, I love what Eric Berry brings to the table, I really don't like this pick for Kansas City. 7:15 - Russell Okung to the Seahawks. If nothing else, you can say that Pete Carroll's first pick is a smart one. Okung will be a great player for Alex Gibbs, the new Seattle offensive line coach, for the next 10 years. Now with Eric Berry off the board, Cleveland's pick becomes very interesting to say the least. They wanted Berry, and are probably trying desperately to trade out of it. If not, I think they'll go with Joe Haden. 7:23 - ESPN showing Joe Haden with tears in his eyes and a cell phone to his ears: looks like the Browns have their man. I know Kyle Wilson is a great talent, but Haden has been a more consistent performer against better competition. Mike Lombardi is reporting that the Raiders are considering CJ Spiller and Mike Iupati. I like the big guy, but at number eight, that would be a huge stretch even in Al Davis' standards. 7:28 - Rolando McClain to the Raiders. I'm almost speechless, which is saying a lot. I can't understand that pick at all. As bad as the Raiders offensive line is, with Brian Bulaga and Anthony Davis available, they take a middle linebacker. Typical Al Davis. 7:32 - the Bills taking of CJ Spiller is somewhat of a surprise. I really thought they would pull the trigger on Clausen, and I didn't think running back was a need. Well, my mock draft is shot anyway... 7:38 - holy s%$t, Tyson Alualu!!! The Jags probably could have gotten this guy at their second round slot. I am just about to give up on this whole mock draft thing. He's a good player with a great motor, but there's no way he should have gone this early. 7:45 - good pick for the Niners. They absolutely needed a left tackle and Anthony Davis is an underrated one. Remember, they have another pick to shore up the secondary. Also, San Diego trades up from 28, which is a steep price to pay. Ryan Mathews for sure. 7:49 - I had a feeling that the Chargers would trade up for Mathews, but I had no idea they would pay such a steep price. However, it was a smart move - they had to get a running back. 7:53 - now the Eagles trade up to 13. Here goes Earl Thomas. 7:57 - I'm happy to be wrong. Brandon Graham is Philly's kind of player - blue-collar guy, quick, and absolutely tenacious. Eagles' fans will love him. 8:04 - to the chagrin of Texans' fans, Earl Thomas goes to the Seahawks. Now, they don't have a chance at Ryan Mathews or Earl Thomas. For the 'Hawks, they get one of the top ten players in this draft. Pete Carroll has scored big on his first draft with Seattle. 8:13 - Jason Pierre-Paul to the Giants, which is a great pick. The Giants can now get rid of their cancer, Osi Umenyiora, if they want to or be content with one of the deepest defensive lines in the league. 8:20 - the Titans select Derrick Morgan. I'm sure Jeff Fisher doesn't care, but he got me back on track. It's the first pick I've had right since number three. 8:24 - looks like the Niners are trying to build their entire offensive line in this draft. With Davis and Mike Iupati in the fold, they're set on the left side for a really long time. I have to admit, I thought they'd go DB with one of these picks. 8:28 - the Steelers came into this draft with a huge need for interior offensive lineman, and getting the versatile Pouncey will be a great start. 8:31 - Sean Weatherspoon may be one of the most underrated players in this draft. However, like the Titans, the Falcons really needed a pass-rusher. 8:34 - the Texans select Kareem Jackson. The Texans blew a chance to to really make a difference here. They should have gone with either Dan Williams or Kyle Wilson. Don't get me wrong, Jackson is good, but they could have traded back five or six spots and still selected him. 8:41 - Jermaine Gresham to the Bengals was the second most obvious pick in this draft, behind Bradford to the Rams. It's a great pick that will give Carson Palmer a reliable, talented target. This opens up a lot for an offense that struggled for most of last season. 8:45 - has Dez Bryant hurt himself this offseason or what? He was supposed to be a top ten pick, but now he will go no earlier than 25 and Demaryius Thomas was just selected ahead of him. Thomas is a good player, but he's not the talent that Bryant is. 8:51 - the Packers selecting Bryan Bulaga with the 23rd pick in the draft may be the best value this year. Bulaga was the second best tackle in this draft, and to get him when the Packers did is good for Aaron Rodgers. 9:00 - the Cowboys selecting Dez Bryant proves that Jerry Jones is still making the wrong decisions. Bad character guy for the Cowboys - surprise, surprise, surprise. He's a great talent, but a very troubled kid. 9:05 - in my opinion, the Broncos selecting Tim Tebow at 25 is the worst pick in the first round. A very developmental project at quarterback is the thing second or third round picks are made of. I'm not real high on Jimmy Clausen, but he or Colt McCoy would have been a better pick. 9:17 - the Cardinals just scored big by selecting Dan Williams. He and Darnell Dockett will make for a great front line. Definitely one of the top five picks in the first round. 9:24 - Devin McCourty to the Patriots was a little bit of a surprise. I figured they would go after Sergio Kindle, but McCourty fills a need as well. Belichick normally favors pass rushers over defensive backs. 9:30 - I have a feeling the Dolphins may be upset that they traded back as far as they did. I'm pretty confident that they wanted Williams instead of Jared Odrick. Overall, it's a safe pick, but not the home run they were hoping for. 9:37 - I like the Jets' pick of Kyle Wilson. He's a great fit for Rex Ryan's defense, and now he will have two great cover corners. It's going to be very hard to throw on New York for years to come. Could the Vikings be thinking about taking Jimmy Clausen? I can't see it, but it's an interesting idea. With the Lions trading up, it could be Charles Brown. 9:46 - there's no doubt that the Lions needed a running back, but I'm not sure they had to trade up to get Jahvid Best. Nobody between 30 and 33 was going to take him. However, it is a good get for the Lions. Best is a big play guy and will add a home run threat for an offense that needs it from the running back position. 9:54 - and the rich get richer. One of the best pass rushing teams in the league just picks up one of the best pass rushers in this draft. The Colts won't be happy until they get 60 sacks in a season. 10:03 - and the last pick is announced by Drew Brees - pretty sweet! Patrick Robinson will be good, but I really thought they would go defensive line instead. That's where they need the most help. Well folks, it's been a great night. Take care of yourselves and enjoy the rest of the draft.
